Sometimes the Right Move Isn't the Biggest One

A few months ago, I imagined the rest of this year very differently.

I thought I'd be traveling more, applying for larger exhibitions, and spending more time building my career outside of Atlanta.

Life had other plans.

My mom became seriously ill 4 days after my award winning art exhibit in New York, and these days my biggest role isn't just being an artist. It's being a caregiver.

For a while, I struggled with that.

I wondered if I was falling behind. The art world moves quickly, and it's easy to feel like every opportunity you don't take is one you'll never get back.

Then I realized something.

Not every season is meant for expansion.

Some seasons are meant for building.

Instead of chasing exhibitions across the country, I've decided to stay local for now. I'm preparing for a small exhibition at a neighborhood coffeehouse, and I'm searching for a studio where I can create consistently and eventually host intimate exhibitions of my own.

To some people, that might look like thinking smaller.

To me, it feels like building a stronger foundation.

Art has taught me that every meaningful piece begins with a solid surface. You can't rush the beginning and expect the work to last.

Maybe careers are the same way.

I'm learning that success isn't always about how far you travel or how many exhibitions you can list on your résumé. Sometimes it's about recognizing what this season of your life requires and giving yourself permission to honor it.

The work will still be there.

The opportunities will come again.

But the people we love won't always need us in the same way they do today.

For now, my focus is simple: create good work, stay present, and build something that will last long after this season has passed.

Maybe that's what growth looks like.

Not doing more.

Doing what matters most.
