There was a time when I believed there was a secret room in the art world.

You know the one.

The room where galleries discover artists overnight. Where collectors somehow know exactly who to follow. Where opportunities seem to find the same people over and over again.

For a while, I wondered if I simply hadn't been invited.

Every rejection felt like proof that everyone else knew something I didn't.

As artists, it's easy to believe that success belongs to people with better connections, bigger networks, or access to rooms we'll never enter.

But over the years, I've started to see it differently. The artists I admire most didn't wait for an invitation.

They kept creating.

They kept applying.

They kept hearing "no."

They kept showing up.

Eventually, the room had no choice but to notice them.

My own journey hasn't been a straight line. I've exhibited work in New York, experienced the excitement of major art fairs, and also gone home wondering why a show didn't lead to the opportunities I hoped for.

I've celebrated wins that few people saw and faced disappointments that made me question whether I belonged in this industry at all.

What I've learned is this:

Belonging isn't something another person gives you. It's something you build by continuing to create, even when no one is watching.

Every painting is another introduction.

Every application is another knock on the door.

Every conversation is another opportunity for someone to discover your work.

The invitation doesn't always arrive first.

Sometimes your consistency becomes the invitation.

So if you're an artist wondering whether you're "in" yet, keep making the work only you can make.

The people who need to find it can't discover the pieces you never create.
